 Summary of Requirements

Involvement of a licensed physician or advanced practice nurse is required for AED programs to ensure compliance with training, EMS notification, and maintenance. Users at specific locations must receive CPR/AED training from recognized organizations. AED possessors should notify the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and local emergency providers about the AED. Maintenance should align with manufacturer guidelines, and in cardiac arrest cases, activate the emergency medical services system promptly. Report clinical AED use to the involved medical professional.
Summary of Requirements
AED-Check.jpg Physician A licensed physician or advanced practice registered nurse who is
authorized to prescribe must be involved in the possessor's program to
ensure compliance with the requirements for training, emergency medical
service (EMS) notification, and maintenance. Any clinical use of the
AED must be reported to the licensed physician or advanced practice
registered nurse involved in the possessor's program.
AED-Check.jpg CPR/AED Training Expected AED users regularly, on the premises of a particular entity,
such as a work site, must receive appropriate training in
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and in the use of an AED by the
American Heart Association or by any other nationally recognized course
in CPR and AED use.
AED-Check.jpg EMS Notification Any person or entity which possesses an AED shall notify the bureau of
emergency medical services in the office of public health of the
Department of Health and Hospitals and a local provider of emergency
medical services, such as 911 service, local ambulance service, or the
fire department of the acquisition, location, and type of AED.
AED-Check.jpg Maintenance Program Any person or entity who possesses an AED shall ensure that the AED is
maintained and tested according to the manufacturer's guidelines.
AED-Check.jpg Notification of Use The emergency medical services system must be activated as soon as
possible when an individual renders emergency care to an individual in
cardiac arrest by using an AED.
